The “Special Funds” managed by the Society of American Archivists are the nation’s leading source of nonprofit funding dedicated solely to the interests of archives and archivists.

In 2006 the SAA Council voted to strengthen the potential good that SAA’s Special Funds can serve by reconstituting them as the Society of American Archivists Foundation, whose mission is: “To enrich the knowledge and enhance the contributions of current and future generations by championing efforts to preserve and make accessible evidence of human activity and records of enduring value.” The Foundation will achieve this mission by funding public and professional education initiatives through programs and scholarships. Other activities will include research, publications, and awards.

With the help of more than 250 donors last year, SAA was able to:

• Refresh the profession with new talent by providing scholarships and travel awards to archives students.
• Provide critical start-up “capital” for new products and services that help SAA educate and inform members and advocate for archives and archivists.
• Acknowledge and motivate talented individuals to contribute to the profession via an active awards program.

Any contribution is welcome, and we encourage you to give whatever amount you can afford. If every one of SAA’s individual members would give at least $25 to the Foundation, we could raise more than $100,000. At $100 each, we could raise more than $420,000. Imagine what the SAA Foundation could accomplish with such a significant pool of funds dedicated to the interests of archives and archivists!
