Workshop Description

While photographs are some of the most versatile and heavily-used resources in archives, many professionals lack any specialized training in how to deal with them effectively. This introductory workshop teaches the basics of how to manage and care for photographs. You will discover how standard archival techniques can be applied successfully to photographs in eight modules: appraising and acquiring; reading and researching; identification and handling; preservation, storage and housing; accessioning and arrangement; description and cataloging; copying; and public service and outreach.

Upon completion of this workshop you’ll be able to:

  • Incorporate basic archival knowledge into your work with photographs;
  • Identify specialized resources, techniques, and tools available for managing photograph collections, whether you are researching unidentified photographs, identifying common photo processes, or managing a copy service;
  • Learn about risks and concerns specifically related to photographs, like the inherent vice in nitrate- and acetate-based films or legal and ethical issues;
  • Understand archival preservation and storage options for photographic materials;
  • Recognize standards and best practices for arranging, describing, and using photographs;
  • Set priorities and make informed choices in your photograph management strategy.

Who should attend? Archivists, curators, librarians, record managers, and other professionals working with photograph collections.

Participants should be familiar with basic archival practice. In this course you’ll learn fundamental principles of administering photograph collections; and, although subjects like cataloging and digitization will be discussed, participants will need additional coursework to gain a thorough understanding of specific topics.

Testimonials:

Participant response to "what aspect of the workshop methods/materials was most valuable to you?" included:

  • “All of it. Especially the cataloging, digitization, and identification. Great references!“ - Molly Bompane
  • “Identification and conservation - I have a huge backlog of every type of photograph I could possibly think of, and we got both good specifics and useful basic principles.“ - Elizabeth Newsom
  • “I really appreciated the emphasis on 'it depends' and that you have to make informed decisions based on your situation. There's not always (or usually) only one way! The practical little details and advice about specific questions - like actually looking at various formats of photos, being able to recognize them (some of them!), and feeling knowledgeable about caring for them. Also, I was happy to learn about many resources for future questions.” - Elizabeth Howe.
  • “Discussion of preservation techniques for photographs based on makeup, including digital. Inherent issues with photo collections often not covered in detail in archives literature.”
  • “Distinguishing the types of photographs and negatives. Learning the methods of preservation of the various types of photograhs.” - Tammy Hampton

Attendance limited to 35.
